Nigel was first elected in 2010 as the Member of Parliament for Amber Valley with a majority of 536. He was re-elected in May 2015 with an increased majority of 4,205. Following the most recent election, on the 8th June 2017, Nigel was re-elected as the MP for Amber Valley for the third time, with a majority of 8300.
Born in 1974, Nigel has lived in the area all his life and currently lives in Alfreton with his wife Alice. He has a degree in Classics from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1999. He then worked as a tax adviser for 12 years, originally specialising with small businesses and personal tax, before moving on to advise businesses on international tax issues and especially on inward investment into the UK.
Before becoming a Member of Parliament, Nigel was elected to Heanor and Loscoe Town Council in 2007. He also served on Amber Valley Borough Council between 2004 and 2011, representing Shipley Park, Horsley and Horsley Woodhouse.
Outside of politics, Nigel is a passionate sports fan; he is a long-suffering season ticket holder at Notts County and also a member of Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club.
In Parliament, Nigel initially served on the Work and Pensions Select Committee and on the Northern Ireland Affairs Select Committee. Over the 2015 to 2017 parliament, Nigel was a member of the Public Accounts Committee, the Administration Committee and the Northern Ireland Affairs Select Committee.
Nigel also serves as the Chair or Vice-Chair of many All-Party Parliamentary Groups including the APPG on Accountancy & Pensions (Vice-Chair); Unconventional Oil & Gas (Chair); Anti-Corruption (Co-Chair); Tajikistan (Chair); Pensions (Vice-Chair).
