Dear Constituent,

Welcome to a special edition of my newsletter to remind you about the Amber Valley Jobs Fair taking place this Friday and to update you on the big announcements made at the Conservative Conference last week, and how they will affect you.

Jobs Fair – THIS Friday 16th October 2015 – 10am to 4pm:

This Friday I’m holding my fourth Jobs Fair at Ripley Leisure Centre (DE5 3HR) from 10am to 4pm.

Previous events have seen thousands of constituents attend, with hundreds finding work or training opportunities as a direct result. The fair is open to all those seeking employment or a new opportunity and I encourage people of all ages to attend and meet more than 50 local employers and training providers who will be there on the day. Attendance is free to all and there is no need to register in advance.

We have some fantastic local employers attending the Jobs Fair, offering job vacancies and opportunities, including the Manthorpe Group, Owen Taylor & Son, BPI Recycled Products, Birchwood Homecaring Services, Trentbarton, David Nieper, Derby County FC, HL Plastics, UPS, Future Textiles, Talk Staff Recruitment, McDonalds, Seat Design, Rock Fall UK, GI Group, IKEA and Deb, as well as many more.

Also attending are education, training and apprenticeship providers such as the National Citizen Service, WEBS Training, Babcock International, National Tramway Museum, Derby College, and many more. You can find a full list here.

PeoplePlus, Being Your Own Boss and QA Associates will also be running free seminars for those who attend with advice on interview techniques, CV writing, job applications and self-employment. A full timetable of the seminars is available on the event’s website here.

Amber Valley Borough Council are kindly providing free car parking to those attending the fair and Trentbarton are offering a half-price zigzag ticket for people travelling to the fair on the day – the voucher can be downloaded here.

These jobs fairs are a great way to bring employers, training providers and jobseekers together, to help bring unemployment in Amber Valley down even further. There will be a wide range of organisations offering a variety of opportunities for full-time and part-time positions, and for people of all ages. I hope to see you on Friday!

If you would like any further information, you can go to the event website here, or you can contact me in the usual ways, by replying to this email or ringing 01773 744341.

Conservative Party Conference 2015

Last week, Conservative Party Conference was held in Manchester, where the Government announced upcoming policies and priorities over the coming months which focused on providing: Security, Stability and Opportunity. I can see that the policies outlined – including devolution of business rates, boosting affordable housing and changes to EU asylum applications – will have a real impact here in Amber Valley and I have outlined the highlights of the Conference below:

Business Rates

During his speech to Conference, the Chancellor announced that local councils would be able to keep the rates they collect from local businesses. This represents the biggest transfer of powers to local government from Whitehall. This move will allow local government to control the rates they charge local businesses and they will be free to reduce them to win new jobs or – with the support of the business community – raise them to enhance their local area and build for the future.

Immigration

The Home Secretary, Rt. Hon Theresa May MP, also addressed conference, outlining her outlook on the current levels of immigration. Highlighting that “when immigration is too high, when the pace of change is too fast, it’s impossible to build a cohesive society” We will also need to have more control of immigration overall.”  The Home Secretary also announced the Government will change the Immigration Rules to make asylum claims from citizens of EU member states inadmissible for consideration. I welcome this move, it is absurd that this happens and I welcome the Home Secretary’s observations about the impact of immigration when it is too high.

House Building

I welcomed the Prime Minister’s announcement about House Building with a major boost to affordable home ownership so more young people can have a home of their own. This Government will change the rules on ‘affordable housing’ which will place a requirement on developers to build low cost homes to buy. This builds on his pledge of 200,000 “starter homes” and the extension of Right to Buy to housing association tenants alongside supporting Help to Buy up to 2020 and ensuring councils deliver enough homes to meet their local housing need.
